The cycle is all-too-common. Maybe you buy a brand new guitar or a bunch of books in another language, and youre pumped up to start learning! You noodle away for a while or thumb through some pages and then the doubts start to creep in. What if I have no musical talent? What if after months of practicing  Spanish I still get nervous talking to a native speaker? Those self-doubts can get the best of you if you let them but youre stronger than that, right? We recently surveyed our readers to find out some of the  common worries when it comes to taking lessons. Is it nerves? Is it fear that you wont be any good? Do you feel clueless about what  instrument to buy, or which supplies to invest in? Heres what we found out, followed by  advice straight from current students for overcoming the most common concerns. 1) Im worried I wont be talented  at my instrument, target language, etc. This was one of the most popular  responses  in  our survey. And we totally get it. But heres the  brutal truth: you probably wont be any good at first. So heres what you need to keep in mind: If youre a total beginner, remember that teachers are used to this! As long as youre motivated and excited about  learning, thats what your teacher wants to see. Your teacher is also there to give you real-time feedback. If youre trying to learn from prerecorded videos or books, youll miss out on that one-on-one help. With the right guidance and practice, youre bound to improve your skills. Learning just for fun? Even better! Try to think positively, and remember that even if youre learning slowly, youre still making progress. Setting small and specific goals can help immensely. And dont forget to  celebrate when you reach them! 2) Im worried formal lessons will make learning boring. Did your parents force you to take piano lessons as a child? Did you take a language class in high school or college to fulfill a credit  requirement? Heres a little secret: even if you disliked these lessons or classes back then, making the decision to learn something on your own is a totally different experience. Now is your chance to set your own goals. Are you learning a language for an upcoming vacation? Do you want to learn an instrument  for fun, to keep your mind sharp? Sticky Toffee Pear PuddingIngredients• 8 small firm pears • 200g golden caster sugar • 2 cinnamon sticks • 1 star anise • 6 cloves • 1 lemon, zest pared • 1 orange, zest pared • vegan ice cream, to serve (optional)For the sponge • 250g pitted dates • 2 tbsp linseeds • 300ml unsweetened almond milk • 200ml vegetable oil, plus extra for greasing • 175g dark muscovado sugar • 200g self-raising flour • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • 1 tsp ground mixed spiceMethod1. Peel the pears and cut the bottom off each to give a flat base â€" cut them to a height th at will fit snugly in your tin. Use a melon baller or small knife to cut out the pips from the base. Roughly chop the pear scraps, discarding the pips, and set aside. Tip the sugar, cinnamon, star anise, cloves, zests and 600ml water into a saucepan large enough to fit all the pears. Bring to the boil, then simmer until the sugar has dissolved. Add the pears, cover with a lid or a piece of baking parchment, and poach gently for 15 mins until a knife easily slides into a pear. Leave to cool in the liquid.2. Now make the sponge. Put the dates and linseeds in a saucepan and add the almond milk. Bring to a gentle simmer, then cook for 2-3 mins until the dates are soft. Pour into a food processer and blitz until smooth. Add the oil and blend again, then scrape into a bowl and set aside to cool a little. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease and line a 20 x 30cm baking tin (a loose -bottomed one if possible) with a strip of baking parchment.3. Put the dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl with 1/ 2 tsp salt. Mix well, breaking up any lumps of sugar with your fingers, and shaking the bowl a few times to encourage any remaining lumps to come to the surface. Add the date and oil mixture, and stir well. Fold in the chopped pear scraps. Scrape the cake mixture into the tin, then nestle in the pears, standing straight up, so that the bottom halves are covered. Bake for 35-40 mins until the cake is cooked through. Insert a skewer to the centre to check â€" it should come out clean. If there is any wet cake mixture on the skewer, return the cake to the oven and bake for 10 mins more, then check again.4. Meanwhile, bring the pear poaching liquid back to the boil and simmer until reduced to a glossy syrup. Hey youâ€"guitar playerâ€"you may not know it, but you’re actually an elite member in a group of very special peopleâ€"people who play the guitar. Sure, there are a lot of us out there, but there are still many others of all ages who are mystified by our moves, flummuxed by our finger work and down right impressed with our axes. They look from the outside in, thinking, “Maybe, one day…” but then somehow life, work, and other interests kept  their guitar dreams from coming true. Thus, they think that a fret is to worry about an accidentally unpaid bill, their favorite jam is blueberry, and the fact that you can actually play “Freebird” makes you a rock genius. Here are some other things that only guitar players understand 1. The Value of a Guitar At a flea market or a yard sale, a non-guitar player might see a sweet acoustic dreadnought priced at $200 and think, “Wow, what a steal!” But the truth is, you can get a used or even a brand new guitar online for somewhere in the $50 range. Meanwhile, the same non-guitar player might wonder why that 1960’s Martin Guitar is hanging up at Guitar Center for $10,000. The bottom line is, it doesn’t matter if you’re playing a used classical guitar or a new Taylor. If you love playing guitar, you are happy to have one in your hands, no matter what the value is. 2. How To Pronounce Yngwie Malmsteen (Skip to 8:28 in video) This cat is incredible in his way, and most people who are serious about playing guitar have at least heard of him, and can usually, mostly correctly pronounce his name (depending on who you ask, it’s “Ing-vay” or “Ying-vie” Maahlm-steen). Seeing him live in concert is similar to a religious experience to some guitarists. But if you’re really a pro, you know the truth: he’s a dude who spent a lot of time practicing his scales, and with time and practice, anyone can do what he does, even a 15 year old girl. which leads us to… 3. There Are a  Lot of Dope Female Guitar Players Out There Some people think that guitar is a fella’s game, but there are many straight up incredibly talented female shredders out there. Professional guitarists know their names: Carrie Brownstein, Joni Mitchell, Jennifer Batten, Nancy Wilson, Joan Jett, Orianthi, Lita Ford, PJ Harvey, Bonnie Raitt, Marnie Stern, St. Vincent, Kaki King, more recently Taylor Swift and Tina S, the list literally goes on and on. Anyone who thinks that “guitar isn’t for girls” is just living in the dark ages. 4. Fingernails Grow Like, REALLY Fast Guitarists notice this even more, because fretting with fingernails totally sucks. Serious guitarists are known to carry finger nail clippers in their guitar cases or pockets, or heck, just bite their nails off before a gig in a pinch. And the hard core ones just get manicuresâ€"all the time. Hold the fancy decals or rhinestones in the nail polish though; the steel strings of the guitar will  pull them right off. 5. Picks (for Strumming) Are for Suckers When most people pick up the guitar for the first time, they assume that a pick is a necessary accessory for rocking purposes. But the truth is, a pick distances you, literally, from your guitar. It takes you millimeters away from your strings, making things like finger picking and even just familiarizing yourself with the strings much more difficult. The pick, should you decide to include it in your regular rotation of guitar-tillery, should come later, young grasshopper. 7. Guitar players should really be called guitars players Because NO guitarist in the world has only one guitar. Sure, you start out with one, but one becomes two, becomes 10. Cat ladies don’t got nothin’ on us. At this writing, I believe I am the proud owner of 8 guitars and counting. If you live with a guitarist, be prepared to sacrifice space for that sweet guitar collection. In a pinch, you can always use a hardcase as a coffee table. Rock n’ roll! 8. Not all guitars are gigantic Just like shirts, shoes and hats, there are different sizes of guitars for different sized people. There are 7/8 and ¾ size guitars for those of us with more delicate frames, smaller hands or guitarists who just like to travel light. Fun fact: The ¾ and 7/8 size guitar, such as a baby Martin, fit overhead on a plane and work as a personal item. Checking guitars is for people with too much free time! Speaking of which… 9. Not all Martins cost a fortune The aforementioned baby Martins sell for less than $200 new, and did I mention, they fit overhead on a plane…? 10. People who make and fix guitars are called luthiers And they are pretty much across the board awesome. My local luthier is a Spanish hippy who grows herbs in his windowsill and fixes my guitars for tips. Not to mention, he builds about a guitar a week using reclaimed wood, found garbage instruments and old parts out of various handtools. Can anyone say life skill? Luthier classes are very rare and quite expensive, so if you get a chance to learn from a luthier or take a class at a lesser rate, DO IT! How to Structure Your Childs Guitar Practice Megan L. Playing an instrument offers a lifetime of fun and learning! Children benefit greatly from musical education in both cognition and reasoning. These benefits carry over to school and achieving greater success in all areas, especially math. However, sometimes with children, getting them to do what is best for them is difficult. Here well offer some advice on the best approach to practicing guitar with your child to reduce potential stress and keep your child motivated. Start With the Basics To start with, its important to choose the right guitar for your child. There are many guitar sizes available to fit smaller bodies: 1/4 size, 1/2 size, and 3/4 size guitars are great for children four to eleven years, or full size for ages twelve and up. Its crucial to find an appropriate size, as playing a guitar which is too large can be painful for childrens hands and arms, leading to significant frustration. You also need the right guitar teacher   someone who will understand that children learn differently than adults, and that the lessons need to remain interesting and fun over time, and not just for the first lesson. A teacher who can consistently choose interesting yet challenging guitar songs for kids will motivate your child to love the guitar. A highly motivated child will be likely to succeed in the face of a less than wonderful teacher, but no one can be highly motivated all the time, so its important for the teacher to be engaged and consistent even when your child isnt. Motivate Your Child The largest hurdle you and your child will likely need to overcome is how to remain motivated in the face of sustained practice. There are ways you can support your child more effectively, and avoid the power struggles and stress that can easily take over. Avoid bribing your child by rewarding practices with other activities- such as TV- or with gifts, which can lead the child to believe that learning is only a means to an end, lacking its own inherent value. Also refrain from punishing a child who refuses to practice, as this leads to conflating practice with chores and duties. If  practicing  isnt interesting to your child its very important to understand why. Perhaps the materials need to change. For example, finding more suitable guitar songs for kids. Or, perhaps support is needed for difficulties, or your child is not getting enough feedback about the successes and progress they have made. Make efforts to understand and adapt, and you will surely find your child more willing to practice guitar. Timing and Length Children are typically less likely to be aware of the long term gains they reap from their efforts in any area. When the dream of becoming a famous guitarist falls away, more abstract benefits may fail to motivate a child who is struggling. Focus on validating and supporting your childs short term goals, while ensuring that the material your child is learning is appropriate. It is far less important to have  practiced  for a certain length of time than it is to have learned something in a certain amount of time. When your child is given homework from their teacher, focus on helping them achieve excellence in a small portion of that material at a time. For example, ask them to practice until they can play eight bars of a song perfectly three times. This method encourages the child to feel good about playing well, and not feel burdened by learning too much at once, or having to play long after they are bored. A practice session which begins with learning and ends with success is highly valuable. Shorter, more focused practices lead to a more confident child, and less struggle for parents. If your child practices a specific portion of their homework each day until you and they can see some progress, skill building will become natural and require far less struggle to achieve. Finding Great Guitar Songs for Kids Times have changed! Most children learning instruments today are going to be put off by having to blunder through Mary Had a Little Lamb before they can move on to modern popular songs. A teacher who can gear material to your childs interests and age is necessary if you want your child to be invested in their own learning. An instructors ability to find guitar songs for kids which are both relevant to your child and at the appropriate skill level is invaluable. Keeping a child focused over the years it takes to master an instrument can be challenging. Remember to begin well with the proper sized guitar and a compatible teacher.
